It is not known who this wretch in human vform is. but we IVwl assured, should u be ascertained who it is, that punishment wiil oon follow the discovery. No one ex- cept a low dog would be guilty of sneh an act, and the critrte to society v iar 1 worse than a murder or a theft. The -following adventure matritnonial whieVi is related hi j letter from Albany dated yer terday, will explain: "Quite a "commotion has been created in our be.?y little city by a recent wedding. A young and spritely widow, who for two years past has cruelly per sistedjn breaking the hearts of numerous love-torn swains, uecame -eugageu some eight months since to an .honest-hearted Suppliant, who afterward docame the vic tim of certain slanderous reports, resulting in the breaking of tboeengagement by the bewitching young widow. The jealous fewaiii who had circulated tne slanderous reports smeceeded in ingratiating himself into the confidence of the susceptible wid ow, and to-day were to have been united in wedlock. Our jilted hero happening to hear how matters were going, proceed ed immediately to the scene of action and (lemamWd an explanation, succeeded in iearning-"ihe nature. of the slanderous re ports, and happily proved himself inno cent of all accusations; whereupon our widow broke her plight with number two, and married number one without an hour's w aiting. You may imagine the charsin of the would-be Benedict; but the verdict o! community is tbat the widow 'served him right. '"'Orefjonian Leathkk. M'fpau It is propo-ed. in view of the efficient manner in which our county assessor discharged his duty, to give him a leather medal. We venture the assertion that there is not a county in tho State where this important duty was so shamefully performed as it has been in Clackamas. The comprint is universal, ry bj'tii political parties. STATE XEWSi From the I r rah I. We learn that the Northern Pacific Bail road Company have contracted with Mr. William J. The ."earner Idali". which arrived yes terday, brought 72 Chinamen, to be em ployed on the Nurtlu-in Pacii ic liaiiroad at Kahuna. The Fnnnie Troup took them to their destination 'yesterday morning. From a letter received from Grande Valley we understand that the wiute there is entireI-"di!Verent from any preceding one within the memory of the oldest in habitant. The burners are plowing there, and making preparations for an eurlv sow ing of the crops. The mon -.tains in the vicinity are deeply covered with snow, yet throughout the valley the weather is very pleasant. T. Mrs. A. J. Paaiway. of Albany, arrived in this cit. )' yesterday morning to ascertain what biie rest can be raided here iu behalf of tie removal of lh Phtntfr newspaper iVom San Fr..ncisco to this city. Mrs. Bun: way. upon her recent visit to Cali fornia and the wmiU'ii Suffrage Conten tion, was chosen to the poiiiou of Oregon editress of that paper, ami it was resolved to remove the pi s to Porthmd. if sui fieie.it encouragement were offered in the way of subscriptions and business. The Eugene . ('. deploving the con dition of hat town says : ' J fere we are. forty mi'os from i temperance lodge, with a whisky i on (-very eonmr. al nosi, while ilie temperai c advijca'es are away off in some baekwood? p'ace. where there is nobody to drink whisky and no whisky to drink, m t.iing a terrible ado about tem perance.'' It seems that the temperance advocates ought to storm the enemy V" works iu 1 h it rpiarter. an 1 not spend all their force skirmishing on the outside. Ths -national Democratic tiou. ConYen- Amnions places have been proposed for holding the next. Democratic Convention. 3 tys the Washington P-.d.-hsf, to be met in every instance with objections, which have mo:o or less force. It is only fair to s iy th it. peril ins, no city can be named for this purpose, against which some" rea sonable doubt may not be raised. Our dutv. therefore, is. to seek a point which v. ill combine the greatest advantages with the I'ewest duculiios. A-lde from any natural partiality, we think Washington is tne m is oosiiab'e and best adapted place for this purpose. The first reason th. t will suggest itself is. that a Republican Adminis'.ru'ion is in power, and hence no poliiieal pressure cm be brought to bear upon the Convention. There arc no can didates for the Presidency here, and no combinations formed to favor one interest over another. We expect to take the nomir.ee wid.uv.it question or e mdl.ion. and to give i.im our most cordial and zeal ous .support, havitisr faith that the Conven tion wiii not present any other than the m st fir and the nuwl capable candidate to insure sueee-s. 1 he objection of political influence, whir!) wan urged against New York in 1 .-(.:. ami which wiil be revived to the prejudice oliuher localities -that are now competing for lid'; honor, cannot, he any way maintained against Washington. This point deserve-- serious attention ami we hope will bo fully considered by the Committee which has the responsibility of making the selection in its hands. So far as acconimod ition is concerned. t';ere i ample scope and verL'C enough for all the thousands that may be assembled at that Convention. We are accustomed to the hospitable care of vast multitudes on oeeassions like a Presidential inaugu ration, and in fact, every winter, uben. as now, crowds of health and pleasure seek ers, travellers, and si rangers from 'he Oid World, throng our avenues and find abund ant and agreeable entertainment in the spacious hotels, lodgings, apartments with whi.'h the Capital is provided. The completion of new railroad lines next year will vastly increase our eonneo lions with the en 'ire West, to California, and with the whole valley of the Missis sippi ; so that Washington, in its relation to the whole Cnlon, will be more easy and central point to reach than almost any other city. The Convention will probably be. hehl at that season of the year w hen the tid - o!' travel f.oni the West will be setting towards the East. Pa that, numbers of delegate would naturally take Wa-1 -m-ton in their summer tour. To those from the more dismal mterio-. who have never visited the Cardial, and other who b ;ve not seen it -i..c , the development ot a more vigorous ,,nd attractive '-rowt'-the excursion would present an object of much interest. Lr almost every point of view.thorefore. this city combines the qualities which -re best, adapted to the object, and we are I 'in5;e s;,re that 'lie people of Washington u i-.-pec: n e 01 puny, wouiu extend a cor dial welcome to the members of the Con vention. Thr 7vhV7 .;.? of last Saturday 57? : Two boats h we been to Engone'iTurini the past week." This is a mistake. There has been but one boat here this season. 'Jtji'.rtrjl .
